I'm a pretty casual madden player but obviously I wanna win when I'm playing online so of course I care about my team and how good it is. I thought I was set if I got a card that's high overall. It might not be meta, and it might play differently (scrambler qb compared to a sit in the pocket qb) but overall, a 98 or 99 should be a top card in the game I thought. I was pretty happy with my drew brees that can get to a 99 but then I look on these forums and theyre talking abt how Bo jackson 96 is a S-tier QB. How does that even make sense. I know about abilities but I'm not an abilities guru and the whole throwing release stuff is crazy to me. I thought I had a top of the line TE with 99 Musgrave but ig I was wrong. I just bought dickerson and he's night and day different compared to 98 derrick henry even though he's only one ovr higher. Are abilities really that big in this game?
Game is ability driving. OVR don't matter anymore

abilities 100% are the driving factor on whether a card is good or not.
Qbs go a little deeper because it depends on ability stack, speed, throwing release, and their sense pressure trait.
HBs are only S-tier if they have angry runs x-factor
WRs all need to have juke box/evasive or a prelit Yac em up x factor
oline need secure protector (96 Rob havenstein for example, perfectly fine RT even though he is lower overall)
Dline/OLB need inside stuff + no outsiders and preferably an ability that helps them tackle RBs that have angry runs equipped.
linebackers have to have lurk artist, mid zone ko, secure tackler/tackler supreme
DBs need a plethora of zone/man kos that fit whatever schemes you run.
OVR has mattered in years. Abilities>OVR
The 95 OVR Superbowl TT and 96 OVR Combine players with the right abilities would dominate some 99s without abilities
ive beaten god squads with a 94 ovr bnd squad so yeah ovr doesnt mean a thing……abilities and scheme matter
Overall has never mattered, attributes have.
Before abilities it was primarily speed on skill positions, then secondarily was attributes related to that position (route running for WRs, ZCV/MCV for DBs). Now it's abilities first, then attributes.
