Is there a specific criteria the game uses to choose your “top 3 players”? And is there a way to change them manually?

Hugest overalls and they need to have xfactors and and abilities
I don’t think you can change it manually. I don’t think base OVR affects who shows up in your top that much… I believe it is a combination of abilities and boosts (Team Chemistry boosts, Strategy Item boosts, etc).

Fred Warner is one of my 3 and he doesn’t have any X factor. I have other 99’s w abilities and X factors that also fit my GB TT that aren’t in the top 3
It's the highest overall (idk how the game determines ties but there seems to be a system that tracks overall more precisely imo) and they have to have abilities and/or x factors, if no players with abilities are available it picks from other players, but abilities and x factors are 100% priority. For example, a 99 squad with no abilities could have a top 3 of 3 80 OVR backups with abilities activated.
Top 3 = Highest Overalls
If more than 3 with highest overalls, it picks QBs first, then MLBs if everyone has abilities, which is mostly the case at this point with so many zero AP abilities out there I know many teams have everyone in the lineup with at least 1 ability active.
Not sure if it will choose a 98 with an ability over a 99 without an ability, but at this point in the year, is is usually you starting QB( both of they are both 99s) and MLBs.

Checks out. would explain why Warner is in the top 3 over guys like Pola-Mao, Deion, and Reggie
Based on what you mentioned, it seems that when selecting the three players with the most combo in the game, priority is given to quarterbacks (QBs) first and then middle linebackers (MLBs) if everyone has an ability. This is especially true now that many teams have multiple players with at least one active ability.
As for the choice between a player rated 98 with an ability and a player rated 99 without an ability, it is unclear whether the game will favor an ability over a higher overall rating. However, as the season progresses, you will often see starting QBs (if they are both rated 99) and MLBs included in the top three lineup choices. It is important to note that these decisions can vary depending on individual strategies and team lineups. Ultimately, it is up to the player to decide what combination of players and abilities works best for his team.
