How does shading man coverage work exactly?

I know that shading outside stops corners and outs and inside stops slants, bur can you shade overtop and outside or inside and underneath or vice versa, or can you just shade one of the four ways?

Almost positive you can do two like shade inside and outside and vice versa but I could be wrong
