I went through a stretch where i was only playing squads with friends as the defensive captain and i've recently started playing h2h and WL again but ive found that my offensive abilities could use some work. any tips on getting guys open or go-to plays?
QB with a good release can make a huge difference. Gunslinger is obviously the best ability for passing. WR abilities help a lot getting open. Route tech, Deep out elite, and slot machine are good WR abilities. Try not to just go for the big play. Look for the open receiver.

Great advice here.

Took the words out of my mouth, exactly what you should try to do.
Biggest thing for me was finding my 5-6 go-to plays and truly understanding defensive coverages. For example, if I can see my opponent is in man, I know exactly what I’m going to. If they’re in cover 3, I know exactly where I’m going. Want to know where you’re going before you throw (obviously make your reads and have 2-3 after your primary), but don’t just click A and wait til you see someone open. I used to think it worked like that, but it definitely doesn’t

How did you go about learning to identify the coverages?

There are several ways but the main giveaway is safety alignment. One high Safety= Cover 3/ Cover 1. Two high safeties= Cover 2/ Cover 4. The Outside corners typically play close to LOS in c2 and off ball in c4. If it’s man they’ll typically line up inside the WR.
Find a few plays and set ups that you like and just stick with em this will help you with reads and you will learn how to read defenses with practice. Don’t stress about wins and losses while doing this and you will pick it up pretty quickly in my experience and don’t try to force big plays

Yeah basically what Nicetip said down below! Really it’s just something you pick up over time, and some people do better disguising it than others. For example, in a bunch set, man coverage will have all defenders stacked up over each wide receiver, in a zone they’ll be spread out and not really matched up. But YouTube isn’t a bad place start!
