I believe as long as you use the left joy stick for passing like you do on old gen you can hit the edges of the circle.
If you want to use free form passing, hold LT and then pass as you normally would. You can make the targeted location for your pass outside of the circle with free form passing.
Usually, when I use free form passing it's either to create a better opportunity for a receiver on a deep ball or because I need the ball in a specific spot for a completion.
You don't necessarily need to use free form passing on every play. Personally, I think you can make most throws without free form and be just fine. But when you need it, it's really useful.
