Why do people spend so much on 89 overalls when they will eventually be worth nothing when better cards come out?

Getting nats back from Champion sets really helped. If you don't get it I wouldn't worry about it.  Those same people will also get the better cards when they come out and you will be buying their 89 ovr trash.  They play MUT at a different level then you do so until you are ready to move up to a higher level don't worry about it.

Like when Andrew luck dropped he brought vick down all the way to 240k and the blond bomber all the way to 180k the day luck dropped. Then today ”fruitpunch” dropped and he dropped the prices of all the big time cbs. 9 days ago I sold pat pete for 650k, today I bought 3 of his copies for 690k…..

You could use that logic at any point of the year ... why buy 88s when newer 89s are on the horizon, why buy the 89s when 90+ are on the way. The game is structured to encourage incremental growth throughout the year. 

Now, that incremental growth may not show a massive change on the field by replacing a card or two, but that's when people have to use their discretion about whether it's worth spending extra for the next card up.

Really only 3x you need to upgrade.

Very well said. This can be taken even higher when you realize a lot of high ovrs don’t even have high ovr attributes. Best example I can give is the Clowney card, he’s an 88 ovr and I don’t think he has a single 88 attribute.  A lot of the gridiron guardian cards fall victim to this too.

So if you wait a couple weeks for 90s...then they will cost a lot...we could wait untl 92s, but yep...then they would cost a lot.  The highest rated cards are going to cost the most no matter when you buy them.  A coin stack will win you zero games, but the cards may.  A coin stack is not fun to play with...but the cards may be.  A million to one person may be a lot of coins, but...maybe not so much to someone else.  Then there is selling the card once it gets close to obsolete...not likely a top end card today will be worth zero in a month or so.  End of the day each player chooses...is 1m to much for a QB?  For me...yes...but for someone who passes a lot...maybe not.

it’s all relative. upgrading from a 87 to an 88 today will cost the same roughly as upgrading from a 94 to a 95 during the super bowl. as long as you dont hold a 87 over all until christmas, it’s fine to buy them now and upgrade when needed

I remember the good old days, when I was top-10 in solo battles and top-100 in WL every week, so I had tons of coins. I could buy a Jerry Rice for 800k on Tuesday even if I knew that by the end of the week he would be 400k. I didn't care, 'cause making coins was easy

@TheNickSix has some good points about the illusion of good cards getting you wins.  I think for most players they don't need the shiny new object because it's not going to determine whether they win or lose games.

At the high end of the ELO spectrum though... when you are mostly playing Top 100 players or guys in their playoffs and super bowls... I feel the best cards give you a certain advantage.  For example... Tyreek's speed on my Theme Team has defnitely gotten me wins.  

If you can afford it... why not play with the best cards available?
