Amazing how many people will sit in it. I see a lot of double and triple pancake blocks now too. I don’t prefer to run, but I’ve run every single play against people who sit in dollar. And I’m sure we’ll hear someone say “that is spamming the run”. No, it is taking what the defense gives you.
I wish they’d bring back the cartoonish pancakes of the Dline and LBs when the heavies on the OLine side were +2 or whatever the formula was.
Bingo. Why try to put a square peg in a round hole? Some people make this game too complicated. Take what they give you and keep the chains moving. That's like people whining about crossing routes when you run man coverage every play lol. Turn on a game Saturday or Sunday. Its how you defeat that coverage
So OP wasn't trolling? Lol wow

Just new to Madden. Must be overwhelming to jump in cold.
is this real life? dollar shouldn't be good against the run theres HUGE gaps in the d line. are you trolling??
onekickdude said:I just lost a Super Bowl to a guy who ran rpos, stretch plays and inside zones and just ran my team down the field, it was a close game because I defended the pass really well, I want to stay in this formation and I’ve made all the adjustments possible and he still beats me on run plays, I’m thinking about upgrading my LE and RE, using linebackers and spending all my ap On the d line so that I can worry about the pass and stay in the formation.
what do yall think?
It was good before the patch, use nickel 2-4, been the best for me against run and pass lately. 6-1 even is great for inside, but seems to get crushed on 3 TE stretch plays.
So in calls opinion what's the best run defense formation that also doesn't get me burned when they decide to pass?

I came here to say the same thing.
jakezze01 said:Also, some basic understanding of how real football formations are used carries over to Madden, although there are exceptions and ways to manipulate them to your advantage. For example, run defense is typically easier in a 4-3 or 3-4 alignment.
Nickel is a great all-around formation, allowing more DBs to protect against the pass, while also keeping 2 LBs in the middle of the field behind a 4-down lineman front. In Madden, however, LBs do not animate to leap for interceptions, so players will often use the SUBLB position in the depth chart to add Safeties here instead (since they do not need an extra ability to leap for interceptions).
Dime, Dollar and Quarter formations are pass defenses.
Within each of these formations are various blitzes that are mostly used to pressure the QB on pass plays, but can also be implemented for filling specific gaps in run defense, too, if you find your opponent is constantly running through the same holes.
Also, some of these formations have variations within themselves- like Nickel 3-3, 3-3 Cub, Over, Over G, etc. And those are just nickel variants. Most formations will have different selectable alignments that may add players of a specific position group to the field, like the Nickel sub packages adding more safeties instead of LBs, etc. It sounds like a lot, but you don't have to know everything. Find something that feels right and build on it.
Keep asking questions, though. For the most part people here are helpful. And good luck!

It's hilarious that the next post on this thread is literally just "HAHAHAHAHA" lmaoooo

this is what makes Madden fun. It's a chess match between offense and defense. You want to have a defense that can stop both, but obviously in passing downs (3rd & 8+) you're more likely to use Dollar. If it's 2nd & short, probably more likely to be a run play (unless your opponent is just showing tendencies like throwing the entire game).
Personally, I like to start in Nickel, has some good coverages, has 4 DL and 2 LBs on the field (or you can sub in safeties at LB), and can defend both decent. Then I move to Dollar in passing downs. I also wait to see what formation my opponent is choosing for each offensive play. If someone comes out in gun bunch, I'll stay in dollar because they are most likely passing (from my experience).
But it's certainly a back and forth of chess match between opponents.
Dollar is definitely weak against the run but honestly, defense in general is very weak. If you are playing a skilled player you will get run on anyway but your chances increase if you go with 4 down linemen. You could do a few things in dollar to try to slow down the run but it's a trade off. Such as QB spy, or make sure your coaching adjustments on options are set to conservative ....man up the HB.....maybe use a fast DT like Randle at RE or LE who can take on blocks and is quick to get to the outside.....again all of these things have trade offs. But being in one formation all game that is usually easy to run against - you should change the defense . If you are using the 4-6 playbook there are 3-4 options.
In the games you won to get to the SUper Bowl, none of your opponents ran the balll against your dollar D?

Most of the opponents I face are super pass heavy which is why I like to stay in dollar, I gets lots on INTs in those games is how I win, but run heavy schemes where they double team my DT in the middle makes it impossible to defend in that formation.
Im trying to take your guys advice and switch it up, I'm looking at big nickel over g as an option to switch to.

You can stay in your dollar defense against opponents that pass/pass situations but you should switch formations when your opponent is running the ball on you well and situations like second and short. Defensive coverage is not just like a set and forget thing, you need to actively adjust it
