Just had a Champs Game with a joker commanding an elite roster that kept alternating repeatedly between stretch runs, RPO Alert throws, Mahomes scrambles my defense wouldn't react to, and corner routes. I called him out for it after his second score, which ended up being an open invitation for his trash talk, not that I could comprehend a word of his chattering: I keep my volume to almost nothing. On defense, he pinched his defensive line on every play, and his interior linemen consistently blew through unblocked whether I ran inside, outside, or dropped back to pass. The game was tied heading into the 4th quarter, but he got a touchdown with two minutes remaining, and having kicked PAT's on his previous successes, he went for the RPO Alert and got the conversion. I didn't really care anymore when I lobbed a ball up in the air against single coverage on 1st and 10 and it got picked. (I didn't get the same favor from the game when his desperation heave into double coverage ended with a skying touchdown reception.)
It's hard to care about this game playing against cheesy wannabes. I would have quit out sooner, but I thought I would get some satisfaction making him work so hard for his win. Then I got into the fourth quarter in a tie game, and started caring. And now here I am writing this post, so I suppose I'm not particularly content after all.
Trash players. I'm getting better at holding them to lengthy drives that sometimes end without points. Still, I don't think I can get more than a handful of wins in Champs at this point. The latest generation of cheesers and their charcuterie board approach -- alternating between the variants of cheese to target different areas of the field from play to play -- whether on every play, or just on key downs, guarantees that I have to win an extraordinary number of coin flips when it comes to guessing what variety of cheese they'll put out next. But if I quit out of every distasteful matchup in Champs, I'll burn through my 25 opportunities to earn fair wins.
This has been my experience with Seasons. This has been my experience with House Rules. No one is playing football. They're just playing cheese.
