How do people (on Consoles, or anywhere) achieve different team names versus abbreviations?

For example, if my team name is "patpeatrick" my team abbreviation is simply PAT. However, if I change my team name to simply "peatrick" my abbreviation becomes PEA.

How do I change my three letter abbreviation without also altering my team name?

I waffle between the above. After all these decades, I have a fairly consistent online persona, using essentially my real / nickname, albeit in a slightly unique form. Not sure how I ever acquired this moniker, it was the middle 1990s and I was in college... and it just stuck.
