Anyone have a Franchise with lots of active players?

I'm curious about these CFM (Connected Franchise Mode) topics, generally speaking, but how the heck do people actually play regs?  Any team that gets a QB equipped with a velocity ability is going to automatically have a massive advantage.

I obviously know nothing, i've barely played regs, because it seems mostly unplayable -- abilities are literally everything.  Without SFL (or PLE) the ball just floats out there, begging to be picked off.  I guess i'm coming at this from the angle of, say i want to start a Niners franchise, how does that work?  I begin the league year with default / standard 49ers players, or is there a giant pool that all 32 teams (or however many participate) get to draft their own players?  I guess i need to do some research, but 85 OVR Brock Purdy with 85 Throwing Power has been enough to scare me off.

The only time I play regs is when the 10 year old asks to play me in Madden, we will match up with two random teams, or perhaps Pro Bowl.  Perhaps check on Twitter, i saw folks asking for someone to take over specific team (might have been the Colts), i think earlier this week.
