I would tend to agree with Slammer. NOT necessary on Trad4, which is widely regarded as the best release in the game, although i'd love to use Trad1 a bit more, before i make my ultimate decision. Not sure the Joe Montana S4 card was the best test of that release style.
Anyway, back to you question -- i ran Andrew Luck for months without Gunslinger and did just fine. Over the past ~3-4 weeks (perhaps more, time escapes me at my ripe ole age) i've gone back to using Gunslinger on Bo Jackson (QB), removing HRM and favoring the Master Tactician X-factor, once it charges up, after 9 plays. With the heavy blitz meta, combined with tons of Unstoppable Force and/or Colussus style X-factors, i'm finding that even split seconds matter, or end up being the determining factor if i'm able to get the ball out, versus taking a sack (or having the game destroy me via constant "under pressure" style inaccuracies). I was using the +3 TUP Fearless epic (purple) strategy item to boost Bo above the minimum 90 threshold for Throw Under Pressure, but would still suffer from pressure.

Need? No. You'll wish it was equipped vs a heavy pressure defense though. I always run it because I like holding on to the ball as long as possible.
