Up front...I'm a terrible user. I tend to have the most success when my user is designated to blitz (thus I really have no responsibility and can "roam" (code for try not to blow it). I figured out how to assign my user in a blitz if not designated already by the play called. My question for those in the know...if the play I call has my user (MLB / SLB) calls for me to cover a zone or man...and...I change that to putting my user to a blitz...will a computer player then pick up the zone my player was "supposed" to be covering...or...is it now just wide open? My guess is whatever the answer to this question is...it would also apply if I put my user into "spy". Hope I explained this well and appreciate any answers / thoughts you may have.
If you pre-snap assign your user to blitz it doesn’t automatically assign another defender to do anything. You would have to then assign someone to the zone or man assignment you are abandoning if you want an AI defender to cover it.
Also, yes you are correct it would be the same if you assign your user as a “spy”.

Thank you so much for the answer...as I struggle to even get the user assignment changed my bet is I would not be quick enough on the buttons to change up another(s) assignment. Think I will just stick with the stock plays and "user" a blitzer and see if that helps anything. Appreciate you.

No problem man, for what it’s worth I always have my user blitzed. It makes it so much easier to move freely. If your user is set to an assignment they will be pulled in the direction of their assignment and you can feel the resistance when trying to move in different directions.

There's practice mode for making assignment adjustments. You need to know your formations well, as players will have different adjustment options according to their position. Your best option for making the stock defense perform better is to make the right adjustments quickly, as you have a scant few seconds to adjust. Initially, you'll 'tweak' a defense, but eventually you'll recognize that against certain formations, making a series of adjustments will yield positive results. When I force coverage sacks or get a pick against a quality opponent or heavy cheeser, it's not with my initial user-controlled player, but with one of the CPU-controlled guys. My user's job is to obscure what the rest of the defense is doing, and if I'm adjusting the stock play with additional blitzers or pass rushers dropping into coverage, along with moving defenders in zone assignments to man coverage (and vice versa), it prevents my opponent from playing on mere instincts and sustaining success. If you can make them think, you are improving your chances at getting stops.
Get your 'reps' in on practice mode, and work your way up through Solo Seasons. When you can make all of the adjustments with time to spare, you'll be ready to take those adjustments to the Head-to-Head environment.
There is a great setting this year that shows the play art and assignments only to you - not your opponent. it has been really helpful to me this year In this situation.

I didn't realize that (being pulled when in assignment)...so I'm thinking even if I do have a zone responsibility I would be best served putting my player in a blitz...then I would be able to not only drop into my assigned coverage, but maybe flow more quickly should the need arise to another area quickly? Good idea on the practice and solo seasons...I think solo seasons could be perfect for this to allow me to get the button manipulation down. As you noted...time is short and I tend to get all kinds of jacked up when playing H2H. Appreciate you my man...this is some good info.

Nice...how do I find that? Is it just automatic or do I need to "click" something? Reading the forums there is a ton of things I may be able to learn on defense (adjustments) to make the game more enjoyable. Appreciate all the help from you and the others weighing in.

Yes this is 100% correct.
Taking it a step further for you here:
It’s super important to understand where your coverage zones are being played by the CPU so that you know where your User needs to be. Setting your Zones in coach adjustments is something I do every game before selecting my first defensive play.
Once you get comfortable you can start “baiting“ your opponent and getting tons of picks. In most games I will typically user both SubLb’s, slot CB, or even safeties depending on what the offense is doing.

This is super helpful...I think I have only been scratching the surface of how to personalize my defense...I'm gonna start a deeper dive on adjustments. Can't thank you enough for the help.

Can you switchstick out of a spy?

Sorry man I can’t help with that. I’m still playing 24 and likely won’t be buying 25.
