I just recently began down the path of trying my luck with online H2H Ranked play and i completely understand where you are coming from. I have an above-average squad and can move the ball from time to time (although i tend to be wildly inconsistent on offense) and defense is just plain frustrating. It barely exists in this game. My advice to you would be to employ the "bend, but don't break" defensive philosophy, trying to make your opponent work for each and every yard and hope they make a mistake.
I haven't really figured out, let alone mastered, the whole Switch Stick feature, which is where the real skill gap stuff comes in this M25 cycle. As far as specific advice, find a defensive playbook you enjoy and call a LOT of Cover 4. Try to get your DBs to have minimum 90 ZCV stat. Cover 4 Palms works quite well this year, especially against Trips, but seems to also play decently well against all the bunch/compressed sets we see each and every year. Shaded down, Cover 2 Man can work well... to the point where you can often just put your controller down and let the defenders run routes for your opponent, while you wait for the pass rush to get home, but it's also trivial for any halfway competent player to cook Man to Man, especially once they start working in many of the Cheat Motion plays. Man coverage inevitably ends up leaving some wide open receiver streaking down the field for one play touchdowns. Same with Cover 3, i hate myself each and every single time I try to call any type of Cover 3 lately, people just get wide open... but i've got a few blitzes I used to rely on, that have become far too risky to even call.
As far as specific ability recommendations, it's tough to say right now. Defenders with Pick or LurkArtist still end up dropping tons of wide open passes. A ~month ago I would have told you that PA/LA was basically a requirement to play defense, now i'm not so sure. Nothing seems to improve pass catching (except Gift-Wrapped, but that's offense only). YOU aren't doing anything wrong, per se. Defense is a joke this year.
Get a tall, fast MLB for your USER, 4-3 Even 6-1 has a nice Cover 4 quarters that can play well against both run and pass, while also allowing you to send 5-6 pass rushers, if/when you want. Focus on taking away your opponent's primary read, then Switch Stick around to lock down any weak spots in your zone coverage. And then pray. Hope others in the community have better recommendations, this is how i'm approaching things. 90 MCV/ZCV is the magic threshold I tend to aim for with my DBs.

^^This is the way -- once you get comfortable with the basics, learning to "bait" your opponent, into thinking something will be open, only to hop whatever route and take that away (often using Switch Stick) just as the ball is being thrown. Elite stuff, but easier said than done.

also buy yourself a ted hendricks. He is so tall that he can do 2 things for you
A) if you aren’t the greatest lurker, he’ll bail you out and if you’re somewhat in the area, decent chance you get your hands on it
B) if you are a good lurker, you can be a lot more flexible on lurking and bait your opponents even harder by switching off a low route last second
sometimes on drags or in routes i’ll “switch off” the route and pretend I’m going in for the QB roll out sack and then bail back. They always throw it right too me thinking it’s an easy dump off

I've been running 6-1 out of the chiefs playbook, I run cover 3 buzz and shift my line to the opposite side of the running back. You have to adjust your zones to how the other person plays but it works well in base too. The only thing the base really let's up for me is flats.
Bro I just simply play my game and imply my basic (sometimes more than basic tho) ha football knowledge, learn how to USERRRR so u ain’t a LOSERRR LOL fr tho I don’t use nor bother to learn all the meta bullshits the majority of peepz rely on and I’m a top 100 player In case y’all was wondering or was bout talk smackkk ha. id say for ppl really struggling my best advice is to learn how to make and do pre snap adjustments, I’d say that’s a hugeeee factor the separates average madden players from the more advanc ones.👀

For whatever reason no one’s telling you but 3-4 odd pinch buck o then make some adjustments out of it make sure auto flip is off I’m top 100 and I main 3-4 odd

So basically everyone online can score on most drives if they are top like 1000.
my advice to you is to play into that arrogance. Zones should only be used minimally and most guys online know how to hurry up fast enough to the line you can’t really get guys in positions to get great blitz‘
get some good CBs . Run a bunch of man to man and sit back and hope for a mistake . but you have to capitalize and get the pick or pick up the fumble and you have to score on that drive after . Pre snap you can make your defense look like zone and they will think it is and pass like it was a zone and guys get picks . Just be ready for them to score on most first drive change you GP after that and hope for mistakes
play some qb contain and put spies on the field if they are running with their qb on you
on offense ball control is huge and nobody does it . Most plae i play only have the ability to score on huge plays and cant put together a drive . If you’re good enough to put together a drive then you can win a lot of games . Get some plays you like practice those and then try out plays in the same formation as to mix up their defense.
change your passing technique. If your not using the two new techniques you’re not passing like you would be able to.
Motions , Floods, bunch formations these seem to kill it this year try those .
watch some you tube videos , I’ve gained some good plays from them some are pretty good like Gmais or whatever his name is he is pretty good .
kickoffs - try to get the ball inside the 5 on kickoffs youll get less run backs to the 30 and gain yards right there .
Tall receivers and TEs they seem to be holding passes and in coverage fair better this year.
acceleration on defensive line is huge and needed get High ACC
and most all all decide your game plan
get the players that fit that plan not guys that are rated higher persay . Your game plan is the best gameplan for you and you need to get guys on your squad that fit it .

My best advice is try to set up your abilities to get a good pass rush and guess pass and over the top, while changing up your plays and disguising them (either by base aligning or disguise blitzes) but other than that you kind of have to just figure out the mechanics and user.
