What happens if I start my solo battles on current gen and the switch to next gen? It asked if I wanted to retire my progress, but I don’t know what actually happens? Thanks all!

If it is anything like last year then it will lock you out of the rest of the games for this week. I wouldn't retire your progress as the games that are left will be really helpful for the competitive field pass.
I would just switch to the primary gen you use next week.
