In Madden Ultimate Team, there are 3 types of coaches: Bronze, Gold, and Coach John Madden. In years past, Coach Madden was always the clear choice if you had the Competitive Trophies to spare. However, MUT 21 is a bit different, and evaluating which coach is right for you may take a little more thought. Today’s article will explain how you can acquire each coach, how to upgrade them, the costs and benefits associated with each, and our recommendation on which way to go.
Bronze Coaches are Starter Pack items you get when starting your Ultimate Team and do NOT contribute toward Team Chemistry or have Scheme/Physical Chemistry slots available to unlock. If you are still using a Bronze Coach, you should definitely switch because it’s providing no benefit to your team.
Gold Coach
The first thing you need to know about Gold Coaches is how to acquire them. You can find Gold Coaches under the “Training” section of the Store in the Base Coaches Fantasy Pack that costs 250 Training Points. Once you purchase this pack, you will be able to select your choice of 1 out of the 32 NFL Head Coaches. If you are running a Theme Team, be sure to select your team’s Head Coach for +1 to Team Chemistry. Even if you do not want to display this as your coach on the sideline, this is who you should equip in the Team Strategy section of your lineup. Equipping a different coach in Team Visuals will only display this coach for visual purposes in-game while your Team Strategy coach contributes to Chemistry and does not appear on the sideline.
After you have selected your Gold Coach, it’s time to start upgrading and unlocking Chemistry slots. Every Gold Coach comes with their respective Team Chemistry already equipped in slot 1; this can not be changed. Next, you can unlock a total of 10 Scheme Chemistry slots (5 Offensive and 5 Defensive) for additional Components toward your totals. Here’s a breakdown of how much each tier will cost:
-Offensive Scheme Chemistry Slot 1: 10 Training Points
-Defensive Scheme Chemistry Slot 1: 50 Training Points
-Offensive Scheme Chemistry Slot 2: 250 Training Points
-Defensive Scheme Chemistry Slot 2: 500 Training Points
-Offensive Scheme Chemistry Slot 3: 750 Training Points
-Defensive Scheme Chemistry Slot 3: 1,000 Training Points
-Offensive Scheme Chemistry Slot 4: 1,250 Training Points
-Defensive Scheme Chemistry Slot 4: 1,500 Training Points
-Offensive Scheme Chemistry Slot 5: 2,000 Training Points
-Defensive Scheme Chemistry Slot 5: 2,500 Training Points
In order to purchase a Gold Coach and unlock every possible Scheme Chemistry slot, you will need to spend 10,060 Training Points. Balanced O and Balanced D Chemistries are free, but if you would like to equip other Chemistries, they will cost 30 Training Points each for a possible 300 additional TP towards your total.
Coach Madden
If you’re looking for Coach Madden, head into the Store and open the “Competitive” tab to locate the Coach item and his 10 available Coach Madden Collectibles available to purchase for Series Trophies. If you are unfamiliar with Series Trophies, they are a currency in MUT that can be earned by playing H2H Seasons, Weekend League, House Rules, and Solo Battles.
You will need 20 Series Trophies to purchase the actual Coach item and each Coach Madden Collectible will cost an additional 600 Series Trophies. This comes to a grand total of 6,020 Trophies to unlock all possible Chemistry slots.
As you unlock Coach Madden’s Chemistry slots, you will notice a few differences from the Gold Coaches:
- Coach Madden does not have a Team Chemistry slot
- Coach Madden can get 2 Physical Chemistry slots and 8 Scheme slots, while Gold Coaches get 10 Scheme Chemistry slots
- Coach Madden gets x2 Scheme Chemistry options while Gold Coaches only get x1 (16 total Scheme Components for Madden vs. 10 Scheme Components for Gold)
If you are using Coach Madden, you should only be interested in the x2 Chemistry options since that is a major selling point for getting him. Balanced O x2 and Balanced D x2 cost 30 Training Points each while all other x2 Scheme Chemistry options cost 70 TP. All x2 Physical Chemistry options cost 2,000 TP each.
8 Scheme Chem slots x 70 TP = 560 TP
2 Physical Chem slots x 2000 TP = 4,000 TP
Total Training Points needed to fully upgrade Coach Madden = 4,560 TP
MUT.GG’s Recommendation
While x2 Scheme Chemistry options and 2 Physical Chemistry slots are great reasons to use Coach Madden over a Gold Coach, the real question you need to ask yourself is whether the opportunity cost is worth picking him up or not? In short, our answer is no for the majority of players, and here’s why:
At the time of writing this article, the cheapest cost of Training is about 2.7 Coins. Using this as our guide, let’s see how much it would cost to fully upgrade a Gold Coach:
10,360 TP to purchase and fully upgrade x 2.7 Coins per TP = 27,972 Coins
Now, how much would it cost to fully upgrade Coach Madden? We need to calculate the cost of Training Points required and place a value on Series Trophies.
4,560 TP to upgrade x 2.7 Coins per TP = 12,312 Coins
We do not have an exact Coin value for Series Trophies but we do know that we can always purchase the “Touchdown Pack or Quicksell” Pack from the Store for 175 Series Trophies and immediately take the Quicksell option for 50k Coins:
6,020 Trophies / 175 Trophies per pack = 34.4 Packs
34 Packs x 50,000 Coins = 1,700,000 Coins
By not using and fully upgrading Coach Madden, we would have at least an extra 1.7 million Coins to spend as we please on our team if we choose the Touchdown Pack Quicksell option instead. The 3 additional O and D Scheme Chemistry Components, along with the 2 Physical Chemistry slots simply do not justify spending that much Coin, time, and effort upgrading Coach Madden this year when Gold Coaches cost significantly less and offer better value.
