If you're new to Madden Ultimate Team, you may see the term "Theme Team" used quite a bit and wonder what that is and why it's important. Besides the fact that some people simply enjoy playing with past and present players from their favorite NFL team, Theme Teams also boost your players' ratings that non-Theme Teams can not get. That +2 boost to SPD is hard to pass up! Today's article will break down what these boosts are, what Team Chemistry is, and how you go about building a Theme Team.
Rating Boosts
Since building a Theme Team means you will probably not have the best available player at every position, MUT provides rating boosts to help level the playing field between regular teams and Theme Teams. As you increase the total number of players/components from a specific team in your lineup, more boosts will unlock for your team, applying to all players with that same equipped Team Chemistry in your lineup.
The following Team Chemistry Tier boosts are cumulative, meaning if you reach Tier 5, then you get all boosts for Tiers 1-5:
Tier 1: +1 STR (Requires 5 Players)
Tier 2: +1 JMP (Requires 10 Players)
Tier 3: +1 AGI (Requires 15 Players)
Tier 4: +1 ACC (Requires 20 Players)
Tier 5: +1 SPD (Requires 25 Players)
Tier 6: +1 STR (Requires 30 Players)
Tier 7: +1 JMP (Requires 35 Players)
Tier 8: +1 AGI (Requires 40 Players)
Tier 9: +1 ACC (Requires 45 Players)
Tier 10: +1 SPD (Requires 50 Players)
*Boosts only affect the ratings of players with the SAME Team Chemistry
Where do I find Team Chemistry on my player item?
You can locate your player’s Team Chemistry slot by going to your item binder, selecting the item, navigating to the “Upgrades” tab, and it will be the first slot under “Chemistries & Positions”. If your Team Chemistry slot is locked, you may need to upgrade your item to unlock it. See the image below:
Where do I find my Team Chemistry total?
Go to the “Adjust Lineup” panel and use your joystick to open the “Lineup Tools” menu on the right side of the screen. With this panel open, you will find your active Team Chemistry totals under “Chemistry” (see image below). If you click the team, it will show you all active boosts that apply to players with the same Team Chemistry. You can have multiple Team Chemistry boosts at once, but remember that each boost only applies to players from the same team.
Can Players Switch Team Chemistry?
Some items in MUT can switch Team Chemistry and others can not. If your item is not on the following list, then it most likely cannot change the Team Chemistry it comes with (list accurate as of launch, new items will be released throughout the year that can change Team Chemistry):
- Power Up Items (Team Chemistry available for any team the player has played for in a Regular Season/Playoff game)
- Pre-order P. Manning, C. Woodson, R. Moss, D. Sanders, W. Welker, R. Harrison (Team Chemistry available for any team the player has played for in a Regular Season/Playoff game)
- Team Captains (Team Chemistry available for all 32 teams)
- Ultimate Champion Kam Chancellor (Team Chemistry available for all 32 teams)
- Ultimate Season Hester and Seau (Team Chemistry available for all 32 teams)
What Counts Toward the Team Chemistry Total?
While it says "players", this can be a little misleading since team items count towards your total and some players count for more. Players who are not in their natural position or secondary position (where applicable), will NOT count towards your team total. Check out what counts toward your team total below:
- Offensive Starters and Backups
- Defensive Starters and Backups
- Kicker and Punter
- Head Coach
- Home Stadium
- Home Uniform
- Away Uniform
- Offensive Playbook
- Defensive Playbook
- Team Captains get x3 Team Chemistry
- Gridiron Champion JC Jackson x2 Patriots Chemistry
*Playbooks usually do NOT count but are currently counting towards Team Chemistry. If that changes, we will update this article.
