If you've heard people mention Secondary Positions before in Madden Ultimate Team or you've seen them listed on a player's page on MUT.GG, you probably have questions. I'm here today to help answer the most frequently asked questions regarding Secondary Positions in MUT 23. If you are not running a Theme Team in MUT, I'll save you the 5 minutes and tell you right now they offer no significant benefit to your team. For those running Theme Teams, it's worth continuing on:
What are Secondary Positions?
If you're building a Theme Team, your goal is to reach the coveted 50/50 +2 SPD boost while fielding the best team possible. Let's say your NFL Theme Team of choice has 2 high-rated ROLB's but a weak starter at LOLB; you would rightfully want to put one of your ROLB's at LOLB. Placing your ROLB here will take him out of his natural position and remove his +1 contribution to your team's component total. If you've ever seen a red "X" over your player item's team symbol, this is usually the reason.
However, if one of your ROLB's has LOLB as an available Secondary Position Chemistry, equipping it will allow your ROLB to play at LOLB and negate the "out-of-position" penalty, resulting in +1 towards your total components. This is the only benefit equipping a Secondary Position provides, but it can be worth it when you really need those last few Team Chemistry components to reach the next boost tier.
Where can I find Secondary Positions on my player?
After selecting your player item and tabbing over to "Upgrades", look at Chemistries & Positions. The first slot in this category is for Team Chemistry and will always appear here for every player. If your player item has Secondary Positions, a second slot will appear (see image below). If your item does not have a second slot under Chemistries & Positions, it has no Secondary Positions to equip.
How do I equip Secondary Positions?
Once you have located your player's Secondary Position slot, all available Secondary Positions will appear, allowing you to unlock them for 500 Training Points each (see image below). If you ever decide to downgrade your item and/or remove this new Secondary Position Chemistry after purchasing, you can receive a 450 Training Point refund.
With your new Secondary Position equipped, your player item can now play in their natural position or new secondary position and count towards your Team Chemistry component total either way. In the example below, DeMarcus Lawrence can play LE or RE and still count for +1 Cowboys Team Chemistry.
Do Secondary Positions help my player's OVR rating?
No. Equipping Secondary Position Chemistry on your player will not prevent them from dropping in OVR rating at their new position. A player's individual ratings will not be affected, only their OVR rating has the potential to fluctuate. In case you didn't know, you can see what a player's OVR rating will be out-of-position under their card image on their player page of MUT.GG. See the image below:
Does every player get Secondary Positions?
All 80+ OVR player items in MUT 23 are eligible for Secondary Positions but many do not have them. Typically, if the player has played a different position during his NFL career, there's a good chance the option will be there. Some positions never get Secondary Positions such as QB, WR, TE, K, and P, but in Madden Ultimate Team, we can never truly rule anything out for the future.
*Platinum versions of Core Elites do not have Secondary Positions even if the regular version of the same player does.
How do I know what Secondary Positions a player has before buying?
That's where we come in! There is currently no way to tell whether a player gets Secondary Positions or what they are in-game unless you own the item. However, if you check a player item's page in our MUT 23 Players Database, you will see 1 of 3 possible listings:
- None - This means we have determined the player item has no available Secondary Positions.
- Unknown - If you see this listed, we have not received confirmation of Secondary Positions, but check back soon because we are always updating.
- Positions - We have confirmed the listed positions to be all available Secondary Positions for the corresponding player item.
*While our goal is to match what's in-game with 100% accuracy, mistakes do happen. If you happen to locate one, please let us know.
Players with Secondary Positions can also be found listed on our Theme Team Depth Charts to make it easier when constructing your lineup. See below:
