Just faced someone who is running "tough nut" on every single one of his offensive lineman and a linchpin. Lol. No way that is effective... is it?

If you won, perhaps you have your answer. I've never given Tough Nut any particular attention.
Yah, I mean, how did the game go? Did you feel like his O line was more dominant?
Hell no that isn't effective lol. Whoever is running that (and wasting so much AP) probably loses most games they play. Or did they not have any skill position players that could get good abilities?
If he's using it then it's more than likely effective enough for him.
I applaud him for it

well - it was in house rules. so i didn't get much run against it. but he lost. lol
Probably not most of the oline abilities are pretty bad this year. Not sure if tough nut would even help counter the xfactor dlines

I mean, we don't know his play style...and if you go with all abilities on your O line, that means you have none on your QB. That isn't effective enough for anyone. Maybe he is new to Madden and doesn't know about MUT.gg or where to go to understand how abilities work? So not sure why anyone would applaud him because we don't even know why he is running these abilities?

5 Toughnuts and a discounted linchpin makes 6 AP enough for Gunslinger or Protected
The increased blocker resistance points that Toughnut gives could be an advantage unless the opponent has pass rush specific point abilities as the Defender would most likely run out of move points before the Olineman does.
Either way its something I've never seen so it being new is kinda exciting too
TLDR, don't underestimate your O-line... Although if you are going the Oline investment route, I'd highly recommend special abilities vs default tough nut etc. As folks said above, really depends on your style.
Background: Ghost 50TT team with Luck so pocket passer, Dri at RB so fast but needs daylight. I have linchpin on C (93) and postup on both Gs (93) with Nasty Streak on LT (Trent 94). I also have Sweet Feet at LT backup for motivation chem. I use 1 AP for each ability so 1/2 of my offensive APs go to the O-Line. I only do gift wrapped on Luck, rest on receivers. Burton maxed out is the FB and Vita goes in to TE1 when I know I will be run happy otherwise Tony G. Honestly 50% of APs but covering 4 players each for a special ability coming at a discount does not seem expensive to me.
Results: 5 on 4 on passing is a total lock down, I can stand there for 20+ seconds without any risk. When I run, the guys usually complete 2nd and often 3rd level blocks for me. Watch your turbo as that signals to them to release and block next level. Dri with 98 Speed on Ghost F helps as he is blazing without turbo and then its gone. Has not fumbled for me yet, knock on wood.
Sweeps to the left are almost a 50/50 TD, sweeps to the right are much more difficult. Trent averages 15+ pancakes per game. The combo of him and Vita/Burton nearly always seal the corner. Def sealed if its all three. If I run right I always run strong side with a TE to assist. I balance by running weak side to the left in strong right formation to keep everyone honest and there is also Megatron who is just a beast so you throw out of the same formation to keep everyone guessing esp if they start to blitz.
If I don't spot a slot blitz then the runs are more likely going to end up in a loss if I am running into it but now I am more careful and audible out of it. Burton tends to pick up wide CBs blitz very well although that does impact ability to fully seal the corner, mainly avoids a massive loss but these runs tend to end up at 2nd level for 2-5 yard gains.
Passing wise, 0 sacks given up by Oline since I put this together which is almost 25 games. No pressure whatsoever down the middle. In gun formation I don't even have to move. Trent is a monster on his side and never had a problem with Bosa/JJ.
6-1 side blitz is picked up well on left by O-line, right side does cause hurries from time to time. Definitely need to upgrade Dawand. I heard that Identifier Runyan (1AP) is awesome so will give that a go if I get Kelce with 0 AP TE Apprentice which will free up the AP to give to Runyan. He has both Nasty Streak and Identifier for 1 AP so you can swap to fit your style.
I have found that 90/91 ovr o lineman with boosts play just as good as 94/95s with boosts. I run a linchpin discount and a SP at the RG spot to counter IS. Protected +HRM or just protected depending upon my qb. My 90 ovr bnd qb plays better than any and all qbs and I’ve used them all minus Ltd stroud. I’ve taken the approach of just not having the best players at each position because ea dda has shown me it doesn’t matter who you have. If ea wants that shed or incomplete pass, then that’s what’s happening. What’s the point of having good players minus ability discounts

Civil (Premium) is one of the best Madden players in the world but he is also very community oriented. He speaks to not only top players but the average players also. He talks frequently about how O line abilities are a waste of AP this year.
Now, it's just a game and anyone can do whatever they want for fun but if you want the most effective use of AP, you can listen to the guys who are trolling or you can listen to guys who REALLY know how Madden works and plays
