None of the skill moves are particularly useful this year, so I just tend to play entire games on conservative. YMMV, wish I could help address any of the other major gripes and issues you pointed out. Oof.
The spin move has been my bread and butter even after the patch. I play on all madden modes so the 85spin tresh allows for the good animations.
