I know these 2 are the “meta”, but I wonder if anyone has had success with other abilities using that 3-4 extra AP.
I have HRM but only use it a few times a game and sometimes it backfires

SFL is a must for me. It'd be nice to save the AP though.
I've never used any on my QB and still win. I'm on old gen so I don't trust EA telling me they work
I have a Texans 50/50 TT and I use cj stroud with Gunslinger, gift wrapped and Omaha. He has been pretty good so far.
I always run Gunslinger, HRM, and sometimes Gift wrapped but right now there aren't any good abilities to spend AP on, spend it on running back and o-line if you are a run team, but personally, I always have to use Gunslinger
I use only Gunslinger and GiftWrapped, my record is 347-111 so I´m doing pretty good

I don't know how anyone plays the game without a velocity ability (such as SFL/PLE) on their QB. IMO, these are an absolute MUST, even at 5AP. I've had wonderful success with Andrew Luck and his 5AP stack, allowing me to work in a few other Apprentice abilities, namely; Slot, TE & RB... giving me a sort of bunk / limited "HRM" but it's opened things up and provided a decent amount of flexibility when i need it.
Ultimately, streaks to the Slot or TE can help in a pinch... don't need HRM to achieve that. Cannot urge you to consider, or at least try (for a few games) Set Feet Lead to see what you think. It's difficult to overstate how good this is and it works on literally every single passing down. Well, at least ones where we're able to get the ball out in time, before succumbing to the pressure.
