Are strategy items necessary right now?

Is it absolutely needed to have or you can play without them for now? What's your opinion

I won 5 games in MUT Champions with just the free ones.  Since very few players reach the necessary thresholds anyway, I don't think the Strategy Items are "required" for online play.  Just find a scheme that works for you and try not to throw 3 picks a game (like I do).
