It's when you signal to the kicking team that you won't be advancing the ball so you can catch it without getting hit. If you fair catch during a kickoff you'll get the ball at the 25. If you fair catch during a punt or a safety kick you'll get the ball where you fair caught it.

oh it's a rule that allows a team to kick a FG from where it was fair caught with out running a play. I really don't know when one would choose to kick a FG instead of running a play but hey 🤷🏼♀️
