Have all free abilities as I build my team. I feel like they don't work on D. Using stonewall and it never lights up during tackles and even easy solos seems to have 3 stonewalls with the pile getting pushed for 1st downs. Is this a problem with the ability or is something known goofed with it?

Per abilities.fyi, stonewall grants the defender an improved chance to win a locator based tackle.
Admittedly, I'm not sure what the game defines as a locator based tackle. But from some googling I found a gridiron notes from EA that I think mentions it
"One of the new features that has the Madden Dev team really excited is Location-Based Tackles. These are tackles where you’ll see the running back reach the ball out for the pylon at the last second to get that critical touchdown, or where the tackling defender will struggle and strain to keep the ball carrier from reaching the First Down sticks on a huge 4th down. Here’s a quick breakdown on how these work:
These tackling interactions make our players more aware of their field location and react accordingly, including the pylon, goal line, sideline and first down marker. While there’s not a direct button input on the sticks for these tackles, they will be driven by player ratings and Superstar Abilities. In addition to the abilities, the defenders’ Tackle and Awareness ratings compared to the Ball Carriers’ Vision and Awareness ratings will drive the outcomes of these interactions dynamically."
So to me it sounds like stonewall may only activate in certain situations. That said I wouldn't rule out it being broken. It's happened before that certain abilities just don't work as advertised.
Thanks. That's a GREAT response. Having flashback to first year abilities cost training and my Tony G simply wouldn't throw the stiff arm in August. Then SWEEPING training refunds happened for that ability and a bunch of others.
Any suggestions for what free D abilities to use? Still super broke trying to build a TT before venturing into H2H
Unmatched actually seemed to make a difference for the free Hendricks cards from the season pass. He noticable keeps up with running backs on their routes better.

Maybe outmatched, haven't tried it myself but if it works properly it should be decent. I vaguely recall seeing some chuck out near the beginning as well. I've heard some people have had success with swim club but I could never replicate it.
But I don't think any of these abilities are that good unfortunately all the good abilities require some investment of training.
