We got a peek at a PART of a team-specific set build during last night's stream, where the Vikings (Tarkenton) set was highlighted. As you could see in WizzLe's write-up, the set build shows a series of DIVISION (not team) specific cards - 25 in total, including 2 Division Dynasty 88s - with a series of NFC North cards from 80-84 pictured.
The question is: what else should we expect BEYOND what was shown for, say, the Vikings set, and how might we use this info to plan (really, guess) ahead of tomorrow's drop?
The first question might be: "why doesn't the Vikings set have just Vikings?" The answer lies in the wildly uneven distribution of high OVR cards (mostly 86-88) across the teams in the league. For instance, the Vikings have 0 88 OVR cards in current circulation, while NFC North foe Green Bay has 3 (Woodson, Wilson, and Jones). In looking at the total Training Points value for the 80-88 OVR cards for each team (not counting "same player, multiple cards" cases like Legends, All-Maddens, and AKAs), the Vikings have 17,160 TP in value, while the Packers have 30,020. Remember, a 92 OVR has a 26,000 TP value, so you can see why EA would want to make this happen. By going to the divisional concept, some of those high Packers might show up in the Vikings set to offset their lower numbers.
The second question might be "does each division have enough cards to get comfortably above 26,000 TP, without requiring cards above 88 OVR?" My math says YES - with a major exception being the AFC South, where the entire division only has 1 88 OVR card (not counting the Division Dynasty players). That's the one set of teams that will likely require 87-88 OVR wild cards.
The third question might be "will we need 89-90s to complete the sets?" The answer appears to be "maybe, but unlikely for each team within each division". And if so, will they be wildcard 89-90s? Who knows?
The punchline here? If you you one of each Core Elite from each program (not counting lower Legends/All-Maddens/AKAs) from each team between 80-88, once you include the two DDs for each set, you'll create enough TP to more than offset the 26,000 TP of the 92 OVR TD card you're looking to build, without pre-buying/building 89s/90s. But I've been wrong before...
