How to prevent this?

Had continuously happened to me throughout the year. Not super common but happens enough and always seems to be on 3rd/4th down.

I didn’t switch on I just held A for possession catch. Which I do on almost all my catches but this still seems to happen

I think what happened was that when you pressed A it auto switched onto him and stopped running or you pressed A too early.

I appreciate your feedback. But I don’t think I was too early, I pressed A pretty last second in my opinion.

I’ve heard of the “swerve” but I’m not too familiar with it. I thought it was some sort of way to glitch out defenders?

It mainly helps get better animations. You should try it!
