I've seen a lot of mixed opinions about these and personally I would love to see them go. In my eyes they really serve no purpose, it rushes the game and training is just a way for them to make more money. May just be me though, thoughts?

Strategy Items had potential, but I just think EA missed the mark on execution. Power Ups are tedious, confusing to new players, and limit content creativity. They're also a huge value sink that I don't even bother dealing with any more unless I need a specific ability only the Power Up can get.
I wouldn't be upset if EA got rid of them both.

The biggest part of training is that it also gives value to the market. Without training, the market would be dead for some cards and sky high for others. It also gives an opportunity for rerolls and cards to be cheaper.
In terms of strategy cards, I somewhat agree with you in that the game progresses almost too fast. However, if they are gone, MUT would be exclusively a theme team game for the speed boost, and for people that don't like to use theme teams and want the best, new players, they may not want to play as much/spend as much. It would also absolutely screw all the theme teams which are lesser to top tier.
Also, so many people used all of their coins on strategy cards, and then were out of coins as a result. This could have been an incentive to play the game more to earn back their coin stack, which is both good for the community and EA.

I definitely see what you're getting at here. I'm not sure what would happen if power ups left the game. I feel like the market would change drastically, especially because training wouldn't be needed much anymore (only abilities). Unless, we see something similar to the OOP players and Hester/Seau where you take their first item and add training to act as a power up for every additional item, which I'd like a lot more than power ups. I'm not sure, just speculating. How do you think the market would handle it?
Strat cards can go. Ea added them likely as a way to burn coins from people chasing the speed boosts. I don't see power ups going anywhere. I'd love to see them go, but so much of the market depends on the cards going into the power up and the training they quicksell for to use to power cards up. If only the top cards have value, I think it'd equate to ea losing money by players not needing as many coins. Too much work for them to figure out a new way to bleed their user base of cash.
My first season playing mut ..,power ups ,abilities obtainable by cards not powered up etc.strategy stats that combine or dont ,,what cards release which days ? how promos work and ltd cards. ? .all can be a bit confusing at first especially predicting market value drops on expensive cards i owned..when to sell !! or buy ? this site helped allot ,,especially the player finder and stats..why ea doesn't compare all stats i can't comprehend?? I love strategy cards now that i have all the speed ones..lol ..sucks when you dont...i managed to build a 95off 94def NMS team ,,niners 35/50.,2million coin in reserve...it is possible noobs ,im proof....All in all the game/market seems fine the way it is ,exept the training tax on power ups and abilities !! a 90% training refund makes more sense ..and 15k training for henry 97 is pretty steep....
Definitely annoying that power ups force you to invest so much into them with training, I doubt they would get rid of them, almost like a necessary evil.
Strategy cards had real potential in the beginning, but EA didn't do a good enough job of balancing them out, everyone uses the WR and DB ones. They also said at the beginning of the year they would be auctionable. While most would view this as a coin making method, myself included, it would make it so everyone had the opportunity to get the "best" strategy cards. I have like 8 extra blues(literally just from collecting strategy cards with daily objectives and exchanging grays>greens>blues) just chilling in my binder waiting to sell if they become auctionable or to try the fantasy packs to sell the better ones if it seems worth it. I'm sure there's a ton of other players in the same situation. Or maybe people are quickselling them for the 50k?
Power ups are great. It’s a cheaper way to build a theme team right?? Power ups are usually 500- 5k coins max. When you’re building a theme team its better because (A. )you get boosts but more importantly (B. ) you can concentrate on certain players only which makes it easier and affordable.
it’s really expensive to outfit your team with the best players from all over the NFL and the grinding it takes is unholy and most normal people don’t have the time to put in 5+ hours a day to achieve them
i bought this game towards the end of January and I already have a 97 ovr theme team and I haven’t spent a dime beyond initial cost of the game.
just do the missions, get the free drops from twitch, do the daily missions for a free pack etc. sell the ones you can’t use for coins or training and build up your power ups. Simple
