I don't think you should be able to choose any 3 players in your lineup for top player. That will lead to people putting bad cards in their top 3 so people underrate their team. As long as your top 3 players are at least tied for your top 3 in overall I'm fine with it.

A trillion percent I had an all 99 team last year and it always cards I didn’t want, smart idea I saw someone comment below they would put Gold cards and while they had all 99’s trying to punk someone but if you have say 10 99’s you have to choose 3, or if you have 5 98’s are your top cards choose 3 I think that would be a dope way of doing it !
