When did madden lock plays?

I havent played in a while but recently came back and noticed I can no longer flip some of my defensive plays. 
 

When did they start doing this? Is there a work around?

There should be an option you can turn on/off for "auto flip defensive play call". If its off you can flip play by pressing R2 on PS4. Not sure what button it is on X-box. Hope this helps.

Ya that’s not what I’m talking about. It doesn’t matter what I do the play is always set in the normal alignment.

I haven't had that, but I have had plays break when I've reversed them. It just stacks my safeties on top of each other. Another marvel of EA production quality.
