Today's game is very different .....a lot of back shoulder throws and a lot of 1 on 1 catching....because defenders are not allowed to lay much of a finger on the receivers....so the QB will just throw the ball up into coverage an figure their guy will outfight the DB to the ball. What made Jj's catch so special is that he actually had 1 hand that was stronger than both of Lewis' hands...and he somehow , with that 1 hand, kept the ball from hitting the ground while falling backwards. The hand strength, extension, concentration, balance to do that is as good as it gets. I actually think that Lewis' hand on the ball helped JJ keep that from hitting the ground but still, just a truly amazing catch. Diggs catch was great but there was no defender to fight off.....full extension, but guys have those sticky gloves and such big hands that they can go up and make grabs like that. Still, Diggs grab was special too....just not as insane as JJ's. .
OBJ's catch was absolutely revolutionary. He was at the sideline....literally and right at the pylon. Zero margin for error. his entire body in the air backwards .....and still the ball took his arm backwards behind his body. And this was after he was clearly shoved by Carr. I still rank that as the best catch I have ever seen but I think JJ's is right there also.
A look back at the OBJ catch...
