I think so. He was an incredible player but he could never get past the knee injuries. But the fact is that when he was on the Rams he was overutilized and if he had been in a more balanced offense then he could have stayed healthy more. Probably would still be one of the best RBs in the league. 

But he made the smart decision and decided to preserve his body over his career.

He had arthritis in his surgically repaired knee.   It was not repairable.  By the time he was on the falcons, he did not practice much and they had to use him sparingly around goaline and high leverage situations.

I think it was definitely the right decision and I wish him the best.  He was an excellent player in his prime but his body let him down.
