I have a feeling they are being gated by EA so they dont have free 88/89s on people's teams until later.

You can’t individually back off in zone if you are base aligned and pressed. 
 

Otherwise you can individually back off (at least I can). 
 

I am hoping that is a bug and will be fixed and not intentional.

Cant solve the original problem so they just remove or nuke something instead.

All the solo packs and did the NAT 80+ BND set 3 times and zilch. I do own a hot 85 OVR FB (which I don’t need as EA gave us two other NAT FBs already and I also don’t use a FB).

That is great in theory, but Madden hasn't been a proper football simulation in years.  Football logic doesn't equate Madden logic.  Not even remotely.
